The Blarney Hearts

Every once in a while you come across a group that plays music that just makes you feel better.  They seem to be able to take away the cares of your world for the couple of hours you share with them.  They may be great musicians; they may be good musicians.  What they are is entertainers. They have the innate ability to draw you into their world and make you feel a part of what they are all about.  Vinegar Hill was such a group and founding member Michael Cunningham has assembled a new cast of characters intent on sharing their unique musical experience with you. Irish in nature, but infused with an eclectic smattering of Americana, Blarney Hearts has found as many shades of green in Irish music as in the Erin landscape.

Barbara Cunningham: Female vocalist, penny whistle, harmonica, Bohdran

After 13 years with Vinegar Hill, a break from the stage seemed in order.  The time off has been great, but it is hard to say goodbye to all of the friends made along the way and the pure joy and rush of entertaining.

Barbie is enjoying working with old friends to help them appreciate and understand Irish music and bring it to you in a fresh, yet familiarly traditional style.  She looks forward to seeing all of you soon and renewing old friendships through great music and creating new memories.

Michael Cunningham: guitarist and backup vocals

As the founding member of Vinegar Hill and now Blarney Hearts, Michael has the good sense to surround himself with much better musicians and talent.  His knack for arranging and composition brings new ideas to many of our beloved “trad” songs.

Dana Ingle:  lead male vocalist and Bohdran player

Our youngest oldster, Dana has been a lifetime choir member; be it high school, college or church.  Never one to toot his own horn (not much anyway) he played trumpet in the Ohio State Marching band and still marches in the alumni band as they step out to form three of the quad Script Ohio’s in Ohio Stadium each fall.  A longtime fan of Irish music Dana now joins us on the other side of the stage lights to lend his vocal talents to our humble offerings and your listening pleasure.

Les Helms: Keyboards and Vocals

With the Professor, Les is more.  Free thinking quirkiness is his modus operandi.  Raised in a musical family, he was 17 before he realized that not every family gathered around the piano on Friday nights and sang; trading off harmonies and taking turns on the keyboard.

Les is a true renaissance man with too many interests to even begin to mention.  As well as being recently retired from his professorship at Columbus State, Les has several businesses and along with his lovely wife, Liz, are leading actors in a murder mystery theatre company that presents at Ravenwood Castle in Hocking Hills.

He has a tee shirt collection that has its own zip code, so you will never see him in the same one twice.  This is Les’ first foray into Irish music and to date it has be an experience for all of us.
